‘Has anyone seen over 400 pounds of meth?’ Stanislaus sheriff shares huge drug seizure
More than 400 pounds of methamphetamine was seized during a joint operation between the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office and the federal Drug Enforcement Agency in what Sheriff Jeff Dirkse described as “possibly the largest (seizure) in county history.”
The seizure happened June 30 and Dirkse posted a photo of the drugs on his public Facebook page Tuesday, asking followers, “Has anyone seen over 400 pounds of meth? Our Special Investigations Unit has.” Investigators are not releasing many details about the operation because the investigation is still ongoing.
Sgt. Luke Schwartz, a Sheriff’s Office spokesman, said about 445 pounds was seized from an undisclosed location in Stanislaus County and more drugs were found at a residence in Salida.
He said the 445 pounds of meth has a street value of about $1 million and investigators agree it is the largest haul in recent memory. The next largest amount was 200 pounds seized during a Stanislaus County Auto Theft Task Force operation about five years ago, Schwartz said.
At the Salida home, additional evidence was collected including fentanyl, heroin, more meth and at least 15 firearms. Two people were also arrested but their names and charges were not released.
