Four people were injured Sunday evening when an argument escalated into a driver intentionally hitting people with a car in the parking lot of the Knights Ferry Recreation Area, authorities said.

The incident started around 6 p.m. when two groups got into an argument, said Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Erich Layton.

A man from one of the groups got into a small white SUV and drove toward a group of people, hitting four of them, Layton said.

At one point, a different man also brandished a gun but no shots were fired.

The four people hit by the car had various injuries but none were life-threatening. According to the Modesto Fire Department, two of the people were treated at hospitals.

Layton said no arrests have been made and no suspects identified. The incident is being investigated as an assault with a deadly weapon.
