Update: Modesto officers find evidence of shooting 3 miles from where police found victims

Gunshot fatality

One person was killed and two others injured in a shooting first reported at Briggsmore Avenue and Tully Road in Modesto on Thursday night.

One of the victims called 911 just after 11 p.m. from the area to report their vehicle had been shot at, according to a press release from Modesto Police. Officers responded and subsequently located the victims, all adult men, in their vehicle at McHenry and Briggsmore Avenues.

Two of the gunshot victims were taken to hospitals with injuries that were not life-threatening while the third died at the scene.

Sgt. Kalani Souza said the initial 911 call from the victims relayed that they were being shot at while driving. However, detectives with the Department’s Violent Crimes Unit are working to determine if the incident was related to a shooting around the same time in the area of Boone Way and Moccasin Drive, about three miles from Briggsmore and Tully.

A resident who lives near Boone told The Bee she heard six to eight gunshots right at 11 p.m. She said the shots were “loud and clear” and woke her up despite the television being on.

Souza said evidence of a shooting was found at Boone and Moccasin but he did not know if evidence of a shooting had been located at Briggsmore and Tully.

Souza did say the incident does not appear to be a random act and there is no threat to the community.

He said, based on statements from the victims and the investigation thus far, “It appears that the suspects and victims did know each other.”

Souza did not disclose a possible motive and said he could not comment on radio traffic that indicated the incident was drug related.

No identifying information was released about the victims and no one has been arrested in connection with the crime.
