The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a report led deputies to a body near the intersection where they responded to an apparently unrelated assault call.

Deputies were called around 1:15 p.m. Sunday to the 600 block of Sutter Avenue, near the intersection with Rouse Avenue in Modesto, on a report of an assault with a deadly weapon.

They learned 52-year-old Sheri Kucera allegedly argued with a 35-year-old man who was selling fruit. The Sheriff’s Office said Kucera pulled out a knife during the argument, swinging at the victim in an attempt to stab him.

The man suffered injuries that were not life-threatening and was treated on scene by medical personnel. Kucera was arrested and booked into the Stanislaus County Jail on an initial charge of assault with a deadly weapon.

Deputies were still investigating when a caller reported a body in an alley near the intersection. After arriving to the alley, they found a 56-year-old Latino male, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man’s death does not appear to be suspicious, but the office is awaiting results of an autopsy and lab reports to confirm that. The Sheriff’s Office does not believe the death is related to the assault call.

Until next of kin is notified, the office is not releasing the man’s name.
