Man charged with kidnapping, physically and sexually assaulting woman in west Modesto

Modesto police arrested a man Wednesday on suspicion of sexually assaulting and trying to kill a woman in west Modesto.

The assault occurred in the 200 block of Maple Street on Sunday morning after the suspect forced the victim from a nearby location, said Police Department spokeswoman Sharon Bear.

She said the victim was sexually and physically assaulted, suffering severe injuries that required hospitalization.

A person who witnessed the assault called 911, Bear said.

The suspect was captured on a convenience store’s surveillance camera, which was used to identify him as 42-year-old Ellis Jamal Grey. He was located at Graceada Park on Wednesday and arrested.

On Thursday, Gray was charged with attempted murder, assault with intent to commit sexual assault and kidnapping for the purpose of rape or oral copulation. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

It does not appear the victim and the suspect knew each other, a prosecutor said during the arraignment.
