CHP seeks driver in hit-and-run fatality involving dirt bike in west Modesto

hit and run fatality

Authorities are looking for a driver who left the scene of a fatal collision Wednesday evening in west Modesto.

The crash, about 7:39 p.m. at the intersection of Paradise Road and Vernon Avenue, killed a 34-year-old Modesto man who was riding a Honda dirt bike, according to a California Highway Patrol news release.

The motorcyclist, whose name has been withheld pending notification of family, was northbound on Vernon, approaching Paradise. Traffic on Vernon at the intersection has stop signs. Vehicles on Paradise have the right of way.

The motorcyclist entered the intersection directly into the path of an eastbound vehicle, according to the CHP. The front of the motorcycle struck the right side of the unknown-type vehicle.

The rider, who was not wearing a helmet, died at the scene. The driver fled in his or her vehicle, which the CHP said should have “substantial” right-side damage.

It has yet to be determined if drugs or alcohol factored in the collision, the CHP reported.

Officer Tom Olsen told The Bee that investigators have not yet identified the make, model or color of the vehicle whose driver is sought for questioning.

Witnesses or anyone with information on the crash are asked to call Officers Aaron Norseen or Blake Mitchell at the Modesto CHP office, 209-545-7440.
