For Modesto residents who like to run before sunrise or bike after sunset, there could be extra risk when using the Virginia Corridor Trail in the dark over the next couple of months.

The Modesto Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods Department said lights on the trail, specifically in the area of the Briggsmore Avenue pedestrian bridge, were broken recently by vandals.

New parts are expected to arrive in about eight weeks, when the project to replace them will begin. Both the parks and police departments have highlighted a warning to trail users in the meantime.

“Please use extra caution when using the Virginia Corridor at night,” a Facebook post read.
