Update: Juveniles involved in shooting near Modesto’s John Thurman field, deputies say
The teenager shot Monday morning remained hospitalized Monday evening in critical but stable condition, the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department said.
Deputies responded to a report of a person shot around 8:45 a.m., the department said in a press release, and found a 17-year-old male with a life-threatening gunshot wound.
The victim was transported to a hospital, the release said, and deputies detained a 15-year-old male suspect at the scene. The shooting occurred in the 700 block of Adkinson Way in Modesto.
Members of the public were asked to stay away from the area near John Thurman Field, but it was back open before 6 p.m. Monday, Sgt. Luke Schwartz said.
An investigation remains ongoing. Detectives were conducting interviews, gathering evidence and canvassing the area, Schwartz said.. The department can disclose only limited information when the investigation is completed because juveniles are involved, he said.
Adkinson Way was taped off and traffic was allowed to creep along Rouse Avenue. Multiple Sheriff’s Department units were at the scene around 10 a.m., when some residents standing along Rouse or sitting in their vehicles said they had been waiting for about an hour to be allowed back to their homes.
“We just want to make sure the public steers clear of that area while we have crime scene investigators and detectives on scene,” Schwartz said.
The Crimes Against Persons and Identification units will be processing the area for the next several hours, the release said. The department asked the public to specifically avoid the 700 block of Adkinson Way off Rouse Avenue.
Information for the investigation can be given to Detective J. Rodriguez at (209) 652-0518. The public can also make anonymous tips by calling Crime Stoppers at (209) 521-4636 or visiting www.stancrimetips.org.
