Driver goes 100 feet down embankment at Modesto’s Dry Creek, arrested for DUI

Modesto Fire Department

A Riverbank man suffered serious injuries and is facing DUI charges after driving off Scenic Drive and going 100 feet down an embankment at Modesto’s Dry Creek, authorities said.

Jose Nevarez, 35, was driving eastbound in an Audi A4 around 10 p.m. Saturday when he went off of the south side of the roadway at Wycliff Drive, near a sign to the neighborhood, said Modesto Police Department spokeswoman Sharon Bear.

The Audi struck a fence and went over an embankment, traveling 100 feet before landing on its roof near Dry Creek.

Firefighters used a rope system and basket to rescue Nevarez but his vehicle could not be towed out until the following day.

Authorities described his injuries as moderate to major. Bear said they are not life-threatening.

Nevarez was treated at a Modesto hospital and arrested on suspicion DUI, Bear said.
