Update: Man’s body found on Modesto sidewalk. Police call case possible homicide
Modesto police detectives are investigating a possible homicide on the 1100 block of North Carpenter Road, near Torrid Avenue, where a man was found dead on the sidewalk.
At the scene in the 9 a.m. hour, Lt. Steve Stanfield said the death appears “suspicious.”
There are obvious injuries to the man, he said, and blood was found on the ground where he lay on the west side of Carpenter, as well as on the sidewalk on the east side of the road.
Asked if the blood could have come from the victim, Stanfield said his injuries clearly could have caused the blood loss. But as to how the man was killed, “we still don’t know what we have yet, we don’t know if it’s homicide, vehicle vs. pedestrian, if the guy fell.”
Stanislaus Regional 911 got a call shortly before 8 a.m. about a man down on the sidewalk, according to a news release from the Modesto Police Department. The release, posted on Facebook at 11:10 a.m., referred to the death as possible homicide.
The release said Carpenter between Torrid and Woodland Avenue would be closed during the investigation and several businesses, including Burger King, California Auto Wash and El Rosal, will be affected.
Detectives are seeking witnesses. Anyone who may have information on the death is urged to call Stanislaus Area Crime Stoppers at 209-521-4636.
