A Modesto man led officers on a chase before driving into an orchard and hiding in a tree Sunday night, the Ceres Police Department said.

With air support from the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department, Ceres police found and arrested Yosymar Bonilla, 21, for allegedly evading authorities, reckless driving and driving under the influence.

A Ceres sergeant on patrol at 11:30 p.m. Sunday heard the Sheriff’s Department was trying to disperse a crowd of people racing vehicles near Whitmore Avenue and Vivian Road. Several vehicles, including all-terrain vehicles, left and drove recklessly toward Ceres, police said.

Shortly after, the sergeant saw two Can-Am ATVs speeding east on Whitmore. Ceres officers turned on lights and sirens, but police said the two drivers continued. Police chased one of the drivers until he drove into an orchard near Central Avenue.

Sheriff’s deputies helped set up a perimeter with air support, police said, and Bonilla eventually ran on foot. Authorities found him hiding in a tree and took him into custody. Bonilla showed signs of being under the influence of alcohol, police said.
