One more arrested in Tuolumne River homicide
Two teenage males turned themselves in Monday evening in connection with the killing of 45-year-old Danny Wallace Jr. of Modesto along the Tuolumne River beneath the Seventh Street bridge on Sunday.
One of them, a 17-year-old, was arrested and booked on suspicion of murder, said Modesto Police Department spokeswoman Heather Graves. The other, 16, was “released and not arrested at this time,” she said.
A 29-year-old Modesto man remains in custody at the Stanislaus County Jail, charged with the homicide.
While an autopsy has been conducted, Graves said, determining the cause is “a little tricky,” so the official word awaits additional testing.
The crime occurred Sunday afternoon. Danny reportedly had been in an altercation with several other males on the embankment on the north side of the river, Graves said.
One of the men, Daniel Ray Gassett of Modesto, was found walking in an alley near Sixth Street several hours after the homicide, Graves said. He was booked on suspicion of murder; his bail is set at $2 million. Graves said detectives believe the suspects knew Wallace, but the motive for the attack remains under investigation.
