Three people were in custody Wednesday morning after a Modesto police detective spotted a man who matched the description of a burglar.

The detective was at Orangeburg Mini Storage at Claus Road investigating reports of a rash of burglaries there and elsewhere, said Modesto Police Department spokeswoman Heather Graves.

Inside the fenced area, he spotted the man, who was on foot, and a Honda sedan with two occupants. The man tried to flee, Graves said, but there was only one gate out of the storage area, and the fence is topped with razor wire.

The detective and other officers who arrived on scene had the man and another male and female at gunpoint. The three surrendered without incident, Graves said.

One of the men taken into custody, Kenneth Lindsey, rents a unit at Orangeburg Mini Storage, the manager said.

The suspects were found in possession of stolen property and fraudulent checks, Graves said, but there was no word on whether Lindsey’s storage unit contained any additional stolen property. Detectives were obtaining a search warrant for the unit, she said Wednesday afternoon.

None of the three had been booked, so it was not clear which charges they may face, she said.
