Driver of dark pickup sought in fatal pedestrian hit-and-run in downtown Modesto
A man died after being struck by a pickup truck while walking across a downtown Modesto intersection Tuesday night, police report.
The Police Department posted on Facebook a photo of the vehicle sought in the hit-and-run crash at Eighth and L streets, which occurred about 8:45 p.m.
It appears to be a 1994-2004 dark-green Chevrolet S-10 or similar GMC pickup with a tinted back window and an aluminum “diamond plate cross tool box,” the post says. The truck should have significant damage to the front right side.
The victim, whose name was withheld pending notification of family, was crossing northbound on L Street at the intersection when he was struck by the westbound truck.
There are no stop signs for L Street traffic at the intersection, and Google street view photos show no painted crosswalks. But the state vehicle code says pedestrians have the right of way even at unmarked intersections and drivers shall “exercise all due care and shall reduce the speed” to ensure pedestrian safety.
Any witnesses or people with information on the collision are urged to call Stanislaus Area Crime Stoppers at 209-521-4636 or email traffic Investigator Randy Raduechel at raduechelr@modestopd.com.
