One dead, at least two others injured in stabbings at Oakdale apartment complex
One man is dead and at least two females were injured in stabbings Wednesday morning at an apartment building on the 100 block South Sixth Street in Oakdale, police said.
The report of a stabbing in progress was made at 10:48 a.m. The suspect, George Grass, 28, eventually surrendered a few hours later after he barricaded himself in an upstairs apartment, according to Oakdale Police Chief Scott Heller.
There was no immediate information on the conditions of the two others who were stabbed. They were taken to a hospital for treatment.
Any relationship between the suspect and the victims is being investigated, Heller said at the scene.
The body of the male victim, who Heller said was in his late 30s, was beneath a tarp on a lawn or dirt area near the stairwell that goes to the second floor of the complex on the northeast corner of South Sixth Street and East G Street.
For safety purposes, officers disabled exterior cameras on the apartment building, Heller said. Two hours after the stabbings, officers were seen using a mirror at the end of a pole to check the inside of the apartment. About 25 minutes later, officers were seen leaving the complex.
Heller said that at one point, the suspect broke out a window in an upstairs apartment and threw explosive devices — firecrackers or something similar — at officers.
Oakdale police, the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s SWAT team, Modesto firefighters and at least one ambulance were at the complex early on. The Sheriff’s Department launched a drone and its helicopter circled overhead.
