Ceres police arrest man suspected of fatally shooting the mother of his children

Ceres police arrested a man suspected of fatally shooting the mother of his children near the south end of town Thursday night.

Daniel Garcia, 29, of Ceres was found kneeling next to the victim when officers responded to the 9:17 p.m. call to the 3900 block of Suncrest Drive, a news release said.

The victim, also 29, was not identified. Emergency workers treated her at the scene and took her to a local hospital, where she died, the release said.

Garcia and the victim had children together, police said. Investigators are still trying to determine the status of their relationship and what led up to the shooting.

Call came from friend’s wife

The call to police came from a woman reporting that her husband’s friend had just shot a woman, the release said.

Police said the victim and Garcia were both found next to the driveway of a home where the suspect had been staying with friends. It is just northwest of the intersection of Service and Blaker roads.

The woman had gunshot wounds to her upper body, and a small-caliber pistol was found close to her, the release said.

Home checked for other victims, suspects

Officers arrested Garcia at the scene and checked the home for other victims and suspects, police said. None was found.

Garcia was booked at the Stanislaus County Jail on a homicide charge. Information on his bail and first court date were not available as of Friday morning.

People with information about the case can contact Detective Berlier at 209-538-5616.
