Modesto Target store evacuated after report of man carrying rifle. What police found

A Modesto man faces weapon and drug charges after an incident Sunday night that included police evacuating the Target store on McHenry Avenue at Standiford Avenue.

Shortly after 8 p.m., police got reports that a man was seen entering the bathroom at the front of the store with what appeared to be a rifle stock sticking out from his backpack, Modesto Police Department spokeswoman Sharon Bear said. Monday.

Several units responded, and officers entered the store, evacuated customers and employees and found the man in the bathroom, getting ready to come out, Bear said. What he had in his backpack was a disassembled crossbow, she said.

The man, 48-year-old Andrew Cheadle, was cooperative and told officers he bought the weapon a couple of days earlier and didn’t know it was illegal to carry it, Bear said. He also had two crossbow arrows, called bolts.

Cheadle faces charges of carrying a dangerous weapon and possessing a controlled substance, Bear said. He did not appear in the Stanislaus County inmate custody log Monday morning.

Bear said officers left the scene about 8:45 p.m.
