Turlock police trap suspect vehicle in cul-de-sac, only to be rammed so she can escape

A shoplifting suspect led Turlock police on a high-speed chase early Thursday and at one point rammed two occupied patrol vehicles when she found herself trapped in a cul-de-sac.

The incident began shortly after 4:30 a.m. when officers responded to a trespassing report at a business on the 1500 block of Geer Road. A store clerk there reported seeing a woman shoplift, Turlock Police Department spokesman Sgt. Michael Parmley said.

Officers saw the suspect, later identified as Hughson resident Sabrina Haney, 23, get into a vehicle and drive off. They tried to make a traffic stop, but she refused to yield.

A pursuit ensued during which Haney “violated multiple vehicle code violations and drove at high rates of speed with a wanton disregard for the safety of the public,” Parmley said in an email to The Bee.

She led officers a couple of miles south before turning into Larchwood Court. The officers’ SUVs blocked her exit, so she drove at them, ramming the vehicles to escape, Parmley said.

Haney continued to flee in the vehicle going a couple of miles northwest until it became disabled on South Soderquist Road near the railroad tracks, the sergeant said.

She ran on foot but was caught by a plainclothes detective several blocks away.

Neither Haney nor the officers were seriously injured, police said. After being medically cleared at a hospital she was booked into jail on two counts of aggravated assault, as well as felony evading, possession of methamphetamine, resisting arrest, petty theft and driving without a license.
