Modesto girl killed in DUI hit-and-run would have been Modesto junior high student

The 12-year-old girl killed Sunday evening in a hit-and-run crash at the intersection of Sisk Road and Plaza Parkway has been identified by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office as Yarely Jasso-Gomez of Modesto.

A spokeswoman for the Modesto City Schools district said Yarely would have been an incoming student at Mark Twain Junior High.

As of Wednesday morning, police had not released the names of the girl and her parents and brother, who were injured in the two-vehicle collision.

Modesto resident Kelley Ball, 45, remained in custody Tuesday without bail. She faces charges of murder, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, felony hit-and-run, vandalism and felony DUI.

Police say Ball was driving north on Sisk in a 2006 Jeep Loredo when she ran the red light at Plaza Parkway. Yarely’s father was behind the wheel of a 2013 Nissan Altima, turning left from Plaza Parkway onto Sisk when it was broadsided. His wife was in the front passenger seat, and Yarely and her 15-year-old brother were in back.

MPD spokeswoman Sharon Bear said Ball ran barefoot from her vehicle into the nearby Walmart, where she attempted to take a face mask and a pair of shoes.

Yarely died at the scene, and her brother was airlifted to a Bay Area hospital for treatment of major injuries. Her father was taken to a local hospital, where he was reported in serious condition Monday, and her mother suffered minor injuries, police said. No further update on their conditions was available Tuesday morning.

Traffic investigator Randy Raduechel is looking for anyone who may have seen Ball’s black Jeep being driven erratically in or around the area prior to the collision. Information that may assist with the investigation may be emailed to raduechelr@modestopd.com.
