Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a senior citizen in Manteca early Monday.

The 911 call reporting a possible shooting at Library Park on West Center Street was made about 4:13 a.m., the Manteca Police Department reported in a post on its Facebook page.

Responding officers found an adult male shooting victim, who was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries.

The victim has been identified as William Costa, 68, a homeless Manteca resident, police spokesman Lt. Stephen Schluer said Tuesday morning.

“This is a very fluid investigation and there is no suspect information which is releasable at this time,” Schluer told The Bee in an email. “From our investigation, we do not believe this was a random act and do not feel the unsheltered population is at risk or targeted at this time.”

No arrests have been made. Anyone with information on the homicide is asked to contact Detective Mark Rangel at 209-456-8209 or mrangel@ci.manteca.ca.us.
