Police are investigating a stabbing just south of downtown Modesto that was discovered late Sunday morning.

A Stanislaus County sheriff’s deputy was in the area and noticed a person on the ground in an alley on the 100 block of Calaveras Avenue, police Lt. Jason Grogan said.

The victim, identified only as an adult male, suffered “pretty severe injuries” from being stabbed in the face, Grogan said. He was transported by ambulance to a hospital, where he was taken into surgery.

The victim was semiconscious and it is not yet known when the stabbing occurred, the lieutenant said.

Anyone who witnessed the crime or had information about it is asked to call the Modesto Police Department’s nonemergency line, 209-572-9500, or Stanislaus Area Crime Stoppers at 209-521-4636. Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward. Tips also can be submitted via www.stancrimetips.org.
