Update: Jamestown man killed in standoff had domestic violence complaint
A man died Tuesday in an encounter with deputies responding to a domestic violence call in Jamestown, the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office reported.
It did not release the name of the man, who was shot by one or more deputies at the Preston Lane Apartments. The Union Democrat newspaper in Sonora identified him as Richard Councilman of Jamestown.
A department Facebook post said deputies responded just before 1 p.m. to the apartment complex, just east of the south end of Main Street. They learned that the suspect had a protective order against him from an unnamed person, the post said.
Replica weapon
The man refused to leave the apartment and threatened a shootout with deputies, the post said.
“Deputies initially used non-lethal projectiles to get the man to surrender, but he would not comply with the deputies’ orders,” it said. “The deputies were forced to use their service weapons. The man passed away at the scene of the incident. Further investigation revealed the firearm the man was holding was a replica.”
DA involved
Tuolumne County District Attorney Laura Krieg responded the scene, according to mymotherlode.com. Review by the county DA is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings.
The Jamestown shooting happened about 15 hours after a man was fatally shot in an encounter with the Modesto Police Department on West Orangeburg Avenue near Enslen Avenue.
