Modesto man suspected of attempted murder in airport neighborhood shooting

A man was booked Saturday on a charge of attempted murder in the shooting of a 19-year-old on Friday night in Modesto’s airport neighborhood.

About 10:45 Friday, officers were dispatched to the area of Kerr Avenue and Oregon Drive, where they found the victim. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of serious wounds but is expected to survive, the Modesto Police Department posted on its Facebook page.

The investigation led to the arrest of suspected shooter Laru Omotye Cobbs at a residence on Trask Lane. A search warrant was served at Cobbs’ residence, where investigators seized evidence related to the shooting. The motive for the crime remains under investigation, the Police Department posted.

Cobbs remained in custody Sunday morning, facing charges of attempted murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. Bail was set at $550,000.

Anyone with information on the shooting is urged to contact Stanislaus Area Crime Stoppers at 209-521-4636 or Officer Kyle Johnson or Officer Samuel Catrina at 209-572-9500. Tipsters may remain anonymous.
