Officers arrested two suspects early Tuesday in the beating of a man who had to undergo surgery for his wounds, the Modesto Police Department reported.

The crime was committed about 12:30 a.m. on the 2600 block of Coffee Road, just north of Floyd Avenue, Lt. Jason Grogan said. An off-duty EMT witnessed the assault and called 911, police spokeswoman Sharon Bear said. A large stick was used to beat the victim.

The attackers fled the scene and were caught a short time later in the parking lot of the Greenbrier Villa Apartments, about a quarter mile south on Coffee, Bear said.

Anthony Stewart and Robert Lopez, both 20 and of Modesto, were arrested and booked on suspicion of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and criminal conspiracy. Additionally, Stewart faces a charge of probation violation.

No information was available early Tuesday morning on the condition of the victim — identified only as an adult male — or what led up to the assault.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact Stanislaus Area Crime Stoppers at 209-521-4636. Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward. Tips also can be submitted via www.stancrimetips.org.
