After Modesto crash, driver tries to get back into burning car. Good Samaritans stop him
Good Samaritans saved an allegedly intoxicated driver from himself Sunday evening after he crashed into a wall, got out of his car and then tried to get back in while it was burning.
The crash occurred about 6:40 p.m. near the southwest corner of the roundabout intersection of Sylvan and Roselle avenues, according to the Modesto Police Department.
The Modesto Fire Department reported that its Engine 9 crew arrived on the scene to find a car, well-involved in fire, crashed into a wall. Other crews assisted in checking residents on the other side of the wall and putting out fire that did minor patio damage to one home.
The driver of the car, 22-year-old Ricardo Nuno of Riverbank, suffered minor injuries but was able to get out, police spokeswoman Sharon Bear said. For reasons unknown, he then tried to get back into the “fully engulfed” car, but witnesses prevented him from doing so, she said.
An American Medical Response ambulance crew treated Nuno and took him to a hospital.
He was found to be driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol and had a suspended license, Bear said.
