Woman, 2 children sent to hospitals after DUI hit-and-run crash in Modesto
A drunk driver fled the scene of a collision Saturday evening that injured a woman and two children, Modesto police report.
All three victims — the 22-year-old female driver and passengers ages 7 and 11 — were taken to local hospitals. “The children did not have any serious complaints but were sent based on protocols due to the severity of the accident,” Modesto Fire Department Battalion Chief Andrew Martin Hunter said in a message to The Bee on Sunday morning.
The driver, who was pinned in her pickup and had to be extricated using hydraulic tools, suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries, Hunter said.
Details on the crash were not available Sunday morning, but a photo from the Modesto Fire Department shows the impact sent the pickup into a signal light pole, which was knocked down.
The driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash, a black Honda, had fled the scene before officers arrived, police Lt. Jason Grogan said. They found him about a block away, and he had a strong odor of alcohol, Grogan said.
The man, identified as Joseph Anthony Macedo, 23, of Modesto, admitted to driving the Honda, the lieutenant said. He agreed to take a breath test and blew over 0.08 percent, the legal blood alcohol content limit, Grogan said.
Macedo was booked on suspicion of hit-and-run, DUI causing injury and driving on a license that’s been revoked or suspended because of DUI. He remained in custody Sunday morning, with bail set at $50,000.
Macedo already had a current case in the Stanislaus County Superior Court system for DUI and driving on a suspended or revoked license.
