Police detain man at Modesto hospital after report of possible gunman
Modesto police detained a suspect at Memorial Medical Center on Wednesday afternoon after getting a call from Sutter Health that a man possibly armed with a gun was reportedly heading to the Coffee Road hospital.
Police officers already were at the medical center checking on the condition of a man who was shot downtown shortly after 4:30 p.m., Police Department spokeswoman Sharon Bear said. The gunshot victim’s wounds were not life-threatening, and he drove himself to the hospital, Bear said. No further information on the shooting was immediately available.
At 4:48, the call from Sutter Health about the possible gunman was made, Bear said. Dispatch was given a description, and the officers already at Memorial, as well as other officers in the area, located a man who matched it.
The man was detained but as of early evening Wednesday had not been arrested, Bear said. “This was not an active shooter,” as an early report suggested, she said. Bear and the MPD watch commander on duty could not confirm the man was armed.
There was a threat made, she said, but information on the nature of the threat was not immediately available.
