A Salida man was arrested Tuesday in the shooting death of his uncle the previous week, the Modesto Police Department reported. The suspect, Mario Trevino Jr., already was in custody on weapons charges.

The shooting occurred the night of March 25, according to a news release from the Police Department. About 7:30 p.m., officers went to a home on the 2400 block of Glendale Avenue after receiving reports of a person shot. They found Ernest Trevino, 39, with a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Glendale is in southeast Modesto. The 2400 block is behind Go Green Recycling, northeast of El Vista Avenue and Yosemite Boulevard.

The next day, Mario Trevino was arrested by Stanislaus County sheriff’s deputies during a traffic stop in which he was a passenger. A loaded firearm was found in the vehicle, which led to his arrest because he had prior felony convictions.

During their investigation of Ernest Trevino’s death, MPD homicide detectives identified Mario Trevino as the suspect. The motive for the shooting remains under investigation, department spokeswoman Sharon Bear said.

Trevino is being held without bail. Anyone with information on the homicide is urged to contact Detective Joshua Grant at 209-342-9104 or Crime Stoppers at 209-521-4636.
