Modesto man carjacks minivan, takes joyride in Graceada Park

An intoxicated man pounding on vehicles on the Needham Street overpass Monday afternoon allegedly carjacked one of the motorists who stopped to confront him.

Modesto police spokeswoman Sharon Bear said it’s unclear if the vehicles he was hitting with his hands were stopped at a light or slowed down because the man was in the road.

A 32-year-old man driving a Dodge minivan stopped to confront the subject about his actions. But the man jumped in the driver’s seat and took off, Bear said.

He drove into nearby Graceada Park, where he struck a water main, causing about $2,000 in damage.

Officers apprehended the suspect, Ivan Vazquez, 29, of Modesto, at the scene.

Bear said due to his level of intoxication, he was incoherent and could not provide a statement to officers.

Vazquez was booked on suspicion of carjacking, driving under the influence, felony vandalism and reckless driving.
