The 60-year-old man struck by a driver who then left the scene Saturday evening in Ceres has died from his injuries, police report.

About 6:17 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 3800 block of Mitchell Road on a report of a male lying in the middle of the road. The first officer on scene began CPR on the pedestrian until relieved by Ceres Fire Department personnel.

The victim remained unconscious when taken to a Modesto hospital, officer Freddie Ortiz said at the scene.

The investigation found that the man, whose identity has been withheld pending notification of family, was in the roadway when struck by a vehicle going north on Mitchell Road, just north of Service Road. Ortiz was not sure if the victim was crossing the road or walking in a lane when he was hit.

The vehicle, which continued north, was described as a light-colored Nissan Altima with possible front-end damage, police said.

The victim was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Ortiz asked that anyone with information about the accident call him at 209-538-5678. Tips also may be made anonymously to Stanislaus Area Crime Stoppers at 209-521-4636. Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward. Tips also can be submitted via www.stancrimetips.org.
