Sheriff’s say suspected drunk driver runs red light in Riverbank; 1 killed, 2 injured
Updated story ==> Victim in deadly Riverbank DUI crash identified as Escalon man, Stanislaus coroner says
Original story:
A suspected drunk driver ran a red light killing one person in Riverbank on Friday night, according to the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department.
At about 10:20 p.m., authorities in the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department helicopter Air 101 observed a pick-up truck with front-end damage leaving the area of Nino’s Place, a popular Modesto bar on north McHenry Avenue. They had been looking for a vehicle after a hit-and-run had been reported in the area.
The Sheriff’s helicopter continued to track the vehicle as it traveled east, heading toward Riverbank. Authorities observed the truck driving on Patterson Road at a high rate of speed, according to a report from Sheriff’s Sgt. Josh Clayton. The truck then ran the red light at the intersection of Patterson and Oakdale roads, where it struck two vehicles.
One person in the struck vehicles was killed by the crash, and two other people were injured and transported to the hospital, Clayton reported. Their identities have not been released.
The driver of the truck, 30-year-old Joshua Sanders, was detained by Riverbank deputies who observed signs of alleged alcohol intoxication. Sanders was arrested on scene and booked at the Stanislaus County Jail for felony DUI.
The Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Teams was called out to conduct the investigation into the crash. The team was still on scene early Saturday morning.
