A 70-year-old Modesto man beaten in the head with a metal pole on Thanksgiving remains hospitalized, and his son was arrested for the crime Sunday afternoon.

Shawn Vance, 50, is suspected of repeatedly striking his father in the head with the pole following an argument on Thanksgiving evening at his parents’ north Modesto home, said Modesto Police Department spokeswoman Sharon Bear.

Bear said she did not know what the argument was about but said it escalated when his parents told him to leave and his father escorted him out of the house through the garage.

The father was taken by ambulance to Doctors Medical Center with serious injuries. He was listed in fair condition on Monday.

Bear said a warrant was issued for Vance’s arrest following the attack, and on Sunday, police got an anonymous tip that he was outside a home in the 4100 block of Gagos Drive, a few blocks from his parents’ home.

Vance was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and elder abuse.
