A woman was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving Wednesday after she drove off Briggsmore Avenue and into a canal, police said.

Amber Williams, 24, was driving a Kia west on Briggsmore when she veered off the road at Carver Road, said Modesto police spokeswoman Heather Graves. The Kia landed upright in the canal in about 2 feet of water.

Witnesses saw Williams get out of the car, climb to the to top of the canal and run south across Briggsmore.

She was located walking through an apartment complex on Carver, Graves said.

Williams was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, driving on a suspended license, and hit and run. She also had a warrant for auto theft.

Two tow trucks had to be used to pull the Kia from the canal.
