Modesto man dead, another under arrest after fatal rollover crash

A 63-year-old Modesto man is dead and a 22-year-old Modesto man is under arrest after a fatal rollover crash early Sunday morning on Highway 4 near the Calaveras-Stanislaus county line, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The 63-year-old, whose identity was not released pending notification of family, was a passenger in a 2002 Ford Escape.

Jesus Garcia, 22, was driving at high speed at about midnight Sunday on westbound Highway 4, the CHP said.

Garcia allowed his vehicle to drift into the asphalt shoulder and lost control. The Escape continued onto the dirt and gravel embankment, where it overturned several times before coming to rest on its left side.

Garcia, who was believed to be under the influence of alcohol, sustained major injuries and was taken to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto, the CHP said in a news release

The other passenger in the vehicle, Jose Tello Pardo, 34, of Modesto sustained minor injuries and was taken to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto.

All three were restrained by seat belts, the CHP said.

The incident remains under investigation.
