Suspect wounded by Modesto police remains in critical condition

The man wounded by officers after firing on them during a pursuit late Sunday remains in critical condition but is showing signs of improvement, doctors informed the Modesto Police Department.

No further information about the incident was available Tuesday from the department.

At 11:23 p.m. Sunday, officers responded to an altercation near Eighth and H streets involving reportedly armed subjects. As officers approached, they saw a vehicle matching one described in the 911 call. They attempted a traffic stop, but the driver sped off and officers pursued, Officer Billy Boyle said.

On Downey Avenue near 19th Street, officers disabled the suspect vehicle. One occupant got out and began to fire at officers, he said. Three officers returned fire. The man ran toward a neighborhood as he fired at the officers. He was shot and transported a hospital.

Two other occupants were taken into custody without incident, police reported.
