A man who’d just been jumped by four or five other men was shot early Sunday, as was one of his attackers, Modesto police reported.

About 2:16 a.m., officers responded to a report of shots fired and people fleeing the area of Crows Landing Road and Butte Avenue, Lt. Jason Grogan said. They arrived to find two men in their 20s on the ground in a restaurant parking lot. One had been shot once, the other twice. All wounds to were to arms and legs and not life-threatening, Grogan said. Both men were taken to a hospital for treatment.

The investigation determined the incident began with an argument that escalated into several men beginning to beat the victim. An unidentified man then got out of a car in the lot and began shooting at the group, Grogan said. He fled in the vehicle, and the men who were not hit by gunfire also left the scene, the lieutenant said.

The beating/shooting victim said he did not know any of the men involved, Grogan said. The alleged attacker who also was shot denied being involved in the beating and said he was simply a bystander, the lieutenant said.

Police have no descriptions of the other alleged attackers, the shooter or his vehicle and are reviewing surveillance footage, Grogan said.

Anyone with information on the incident is urged to contact Stanislaus Area Crime Stoppers at 209-521-4636. Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward. Tips also can be submitted via www.stancrimetips.org.
