Deputy shoots and wounds suspect during investigation in central Modesto, police say

A sheriff’s deputy shot and wounded a suspect Thursday afternoon in central Modesto during an investigation of a previous robbery and carjacking, police said.

The suspect was in critical condition at last report, spokeswoman Sharon Bear of the Modesto Police Department said at the scene, at Carver Road and Teresa Street. The age and gender of the suspect was not available.

The deputy was part of a Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department team that encountered three suspects and saw a gun, Bear said. The shooting happened just before 2 p.m.

No one else was hit by gunfire, Bear said. The two other suspects were detained at the scene and were being questioned by police as of late afternoon, she said.

The deputy who shot the suspect was not named. The deputies were working with the sheriff’s STING unit, which focuses on drug and gang crimes.

MPD is handling the primary investigation because the shooting happened in the city limit. The case also will be reviewed by the Sheriff’s Department and the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office, the standard practice with officer-involved shootings.

The exact location of the shooting is not being disclosed at this point. Two blocks on Carver were closed as the scene was processed, including a Stop N Save liquor store and a Mobil gas station. Part of Garrison Park, which is along Carver, also was closed.
