Police: Oakdale man tried to light woman on fire

An Oakdale man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder Thursday after authorities say he tried to set a woman on fire.

Oakdale police responded to a disturbance call in the 200 block of West Avenue just before 10 a.m., where neighbors said they heard a woman yelling for help and telling someone to stop pouring gasoline on her, according to Sgt. Ben Savage.

He said the victim and suspect are roommates and that authorities believe the man wanted her out of the house.

Savage said the man tried to use a spark from crossing electrical lines from a nearby light switch or power outlet to ignite the gasoline, but that officers arrived and took him into custody before he was successful. The victim did not require medical treatment.

Michael Gladys, 36, was arrested on suspicion of arson and attempted murder.
