San Joaquin County jail inmate escaped but didn't get too far
San Joaquin County sheriff's officials have captured an inmate who escaped from custody over the weekend.
Leonard Earl Barnes, 52, was found about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to sheriff's news release. A sheriff's specialty unit assigned to find the escapee tracked Barnes down to an area near Milton Street and South Wilson Way in Stockton, just several miles away from the jail.
Sheriff's officials said Barnes was apprehended without incident and taken to the San Joaquin County Jail, where he was booked on a felony charge of escape.
Before he escaped, Barnes was being held at the jail's Honor Farm in French Camp until Saturday, when jail staff learned he was missing during an inmate count.
Barnes was being held at the jail for a charge of possessing a stolen vehicle and had not been sentenced, according to sheriff's officials.
