Stanislaus County deputy shoots man after domestic violence reported at Modesto home
A Stanislaus County sheriff’s deputy shot a man early Sunday after responding to reported domestic violence at a home in a rural Modesto neighborhood.
The man who was shot was taken by ambulance to a local hospital and was expected to survive his injuries, sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Anthony Bejaran said Sunday afternoon.
About 1:10 a.m. Sunday, two deputies responded to a 911 call reporting domestic violence in the 1700 block of Vivian Road, just south of West Hatch Road. The rural neighborhood sits west of South Carpenter Road and south of the Tuolumne River.
The deputies arrived eight minutes after the incident was reported. Shortly after arriving there, the deputies radioed dispatchers that shots had been fired and a male at the home was hit by gunfire, sheriff’s officials said.
Medics responded to the scene and took the injured man to the hospital. Sheriff’s officials on Sunday afternoon had not released the man’s name, age or city of residence.
The deputies were not injured. Sheriff’s officials said only one of the deputies fired his gun during the late night incident.
The deputy will be placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard protocol for deputy-involved shootings. Sheriff’s officials did not release the deputy’s name Sunday.
The Sheriff’s Department is conducting both a criminal and administrative investigation into the shooting. The Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office is conducting an independent review of the shooting.
Authorities did not release any further details about the shooting Sunday. It was unclear whether the man who was shot was armed with a weapon, what type of threat he posed to the deputy that led to the shooting, where exactly on the property the shooting took place, or why the deputy fired his gun.
Sheriff’s officials ask anyone with information about this shooting to call Detective Jesse Tovar at 209-525-7080 or Crime Stoppers at 209-521-4636 or send an e-mail to www.stancrimetips.org. Callers to Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous and could be eligible for eligible for cash reward.
