Modesto attempted-murder suspect arrested in Turlock

A man wanted in connection with a west Modesto shooting last week was arrested Thursday after a pursuit by Turlock police.

At 4:40 a.m., Sean Smith, 26, was seen by an officer “prying on the door” of the Smoke Depot in the 500 block of Lander Avenue, said Turlock police Lt. Ron Reid.

As the officer turned toward Smith, the suspect allegedly jumped into a red Chevrolet truck driven by Ricky Beets, 31. The truck, Reid said, was stolen.

The suspects led officers on a pursuit that zigzagged through south Turlock at speeds of 70 mph through residential neighborhoods.

The truck hit a curb at Rockwood Avenue and Boxwood Way, then drove through a field at English and Glenwood avenues. At English and Linwood avenues, a female passenger jumped out of the car, Reid said.

Mckayla Dollard, 26, was found about a mile from there, walking in the area of Fifth and B streets. She was arrested on suspicion of parole violation.

The pursuit ended when the truck crashed into a pole at Linwood and Golf Road.

There, officers arrested Smith and Beets.

Smith had a warrant for his arrest for attempted murder related to the April 1 shooting of a man at a home on Ritsch Lane in west Modesto.

The victim underwent surgery and survived.

Smith and Beets were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy and attempted burglary, and Beets also faces charges of felony evading, hit-and-run, auto theft and resisting arrest.
