Pregnant woman, 19, shot in Modesto

A 19-year-old pregnant woman was in serious but stable condition after being shot in the shoulder Wednesday night, authorities said.

According to Modesto Police Department spokeswoman Heather Graves, officers were called to the 400 block of Alturas Avenue in southwest Modesto at 9:31 p.m.

“They found a pregnant female suffering from a gunshot wound to her shoulder,” Graves said. The woman was riding in a car when the shooting occurred.

“The car was struck multiple times with bullets,” Graves said. A 6-year-old child riding in the back seat was not injured.

Police don’t know where the shooting occurred, or whether the shooter was in another car or on the street.

“They were unable to locate a crime scene,” Graves said. “We believe that it happened on Pelton Avenue, but the victim and her boyfriend gave conflicting statements.”

The woman was taken to an area hospital, where she was listed in serious but stable condition. The status of her fetus was not clear.

Detectives investigating the shooting believe it was gang-related but have not identified any suspects. Witnesses have not been cooperative, Graves said.
