Police: Do you really want to spend the early hours of Father’s Day in jail?

Modesto police plan extra patrols against driving under the influence from 7 p.m. Saturday to 3 a.m. Sunday.

The DUI Enforcement Team will work areas of the city with a high rate of accidents and arrests for driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs.

The department cited research showing that the problem can be reduced by 20 percent through publicity about the patrols. The exact locations are not being announced.

Modesto has had 203 collisions involving impaired drivers over the past three years. They killed 27 people and injured another 317.

The department cautions drivers that prescription drugs that affect driving also can lead to arrest.

This weekend’s effort will not involve sobriety checkpoints, another part of the program. It is funded by a federal grant.
