Modesto man faces more prison time for latest DUI conviction

A 65-year-old Modesto man faces a maximum sentence of 7 years and 8 months in prison for driving drunk and evading police last year.

Hilton Royce Jackson on Feb. 23 was convicted of felony charges of evading a police officer and driving under the influence of alcohol with a a previous DUI conviction within the past ten years, according to the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office. The defendant has served four previous prison sentences, and he has had numerous felony DUI convictions.

Deputy District Attorney Tony Colacito prosecuted the case. His job is funded by a grant from the state Office of Traffic Safety to handle cases involving repeated DUI offenders.

On April 9, the California Highway Patrol tried to pull over Jackson for a traffic violation on McHenry Avenue. Prosecutors said Jackson did not stop and sped away through a residential neighborhood, before losing control of his car and hitting the curb, which stopped the car.

A subsequent blood test showed Jackson’s blood-alcohol level was .15 percent, nearly twice the legal limit, according to prosecutors.

Superior Court Judge Thomas Zeff has scheduled a sentencing hearing for Jackson on April 23.
