Driver in fatal head-on crash east of Modesto booked on felony DUI charges

The driver of a sport utility that crashed head-on with another vehicle, killing the driver, was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence shortly after his release from the hospital Thursday evening, according to California Highway Patrol Sgt. Gerardo Serrato.

The crash occurred at about 4:30 p.m. on Parker Road east of Modesto between Church Street and Dewitt Road.

Michael Jasper Daniels, 34, of Oakdale, was driving an Acura MDX east on Parker Road when he drifted into the westbound lane and crashed head on with Mazda 3 driven by Karen Peña-Marquez.

Peña-Marquez, 28, of Modesto, was trapped inside the car and died at the scene.

Daniels was treated for minor injuries at a Modesto hospital then booked into the Stanislaus County Jail on one count of felony DUI. The investigation is ongoing and Daniels could face additional charges.
