Modesto police arrest two in package thefts

A car stop in northeast Modesto Thursday yielded the arrests of two people and the recovery of several packages they allegedly stole from several homes.

According to a news release from Modersto police, detectives with the department’s Property Crimes Unit stopped a vehicle at 2:30 p.m. “after determining that the occupants had stolen a package from the front porch of a Modesto home. Detectives recovered the original suspected stolen package along with three additional packages which were found to also be stolen, each from different residences in Modesto.”

Police arrested Lucky Sysavath, 31, and Sarah Taberna, 33, both of Modesto. They were booked into jail in to the Stanislaus County Jail on charges of theft and conspiracy.

Package thefts continue to be a problem, especially during the holiday season when shopping and shipping increase, authorities said in the release. They added that detectives will be conducting undercover operations throughout the holiday season in an effort to catch packagae thieves. Police suggest residents keep an eye out for people stealing packages and contact authorities right away if something seems amiss.

“Also, if you know you’re not going to be home when you packages arrive consider having you delivery held at the carrier facility or ask a neighbor to keep an eye out for your delivery.”
