Suspended Modesto teen found near campus with gun in his backpack
A 17-year-old boy who was suspended from Elliott Alternative Education Center for fighting with a girl was arrested the next day when Modesto Police found him near the campus with a gun in his backpack.
The teen was suspended last week following a verbal dispute with a female student, said Modesto Police Department spokeswoman Heather Graves.
She said officers went to the school the next day, Oct. 14, to follow up on the incident and learned the boy had posted a video on social media in which he mentions a girl who got him in trouble. In the same video he pans to someone else behind him who was holding a firearm, Graves said.
As a sergeant was leaving the school on Sunrise Avenue in his vehicle he spotted the suspect about seven blocks away.
When the sergeant tried to make contact with the teen ran and threw his backpack.
Officers caught up to the teen and detained him using a Taser, Graves said. An officer handcuffed him but before he could get the teen into a patrol car he broke from his grasp. He was quickly detained again, Graves said.
The sergeant who saw the suspect toss his backpack recovered it and found a firearm inside.
The teen was arrested on suspicion of possession of a loaded and concealed firearm and resisting arrest. He is also on probation for robbery, Graves said.
