The Salida Chamber of Commerce held a party Friday evening to welcome the community’s new and returning firefighters. The Salida Fire Protection District resumed services Jan. 15 after several years as part of the Modesto Regional Fire Authority. MRFA, which the city of Modesto formed with the Salida district and Stanislaus County in 2011, dissolved June 30 over concerns of how to govern and expand the fire authority. After MRFA’s breakup, Salida was paying Modesto $102,500 a month for Modesto to staff one Salida fire station. That arrangement ended Jan. 15. Salida is starting with seven firefighters and one division chief and about 10 volunteers to staff one fire station, No. 12, at Salida Boulevard and Broadway Avenue. At the celebration there Friday, residents got to meet the firefighters and could sign up to apply to become volunteers.
