YESTERYEARS

50 YEARS AGO: By a vote of 6-2, the Stanislaus County Planning Commission denied the permit application for a garbage dump a mile northwest of Woodward Reservoir. Clinton L. Ferguson planned to put the dump on 144 acres of federally owned flood lands. Had the large dump been permitted, it would have been highly mechanized, and would have served 250,000 persons within an 18-mile radius, as the site would have been located midway between Dodds and Carver roads and a half-mile west of 26 Mile Road.
