LATINO ADVOCATES TO WATCH STATE OF UNION
Mi Familia Vota California will gather with Latino advocates Tuesday evening in Modesto to watch President Barack Obama’s annual State of the Union address and to rally for the administration’s programs to provide temporary relief to immigrant children and parents of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents. “We want to hear what the president will say about immigration and we also want to rally to remind the Latino and immigrant communities not to get discouraged when they hear reports about the legal and legislative battles,” said Victor Orozco, a Modesto community leader, in a news release. “We’re going to fight hard to win, and in the meantime, our community should get ready to apply for the expanded DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) and DAPA (Deferred Action for Parental Accountability) programs. We never forget that this is one nation under God, all we are asking is liberty and justice for all.” Information on how to apply and what documents will be needed to become eligible is available at iAmerica.org. Tuesday’s viewing party is at 6 p.m. at Congregations Building Community, 511 Vine St. For more information, contact Sergio Lara at (209) 589-5767 or sergiol@mifamiliavota.org; Homero Mejia at (209) 604-8085 or homero.mejia@sbcglobal.net; or Yamilet Valladolid at (209) 523-2860 or YVal@elconcilio.org.
